Where to Stay on St. Simons Island: The Neighborhood Guide

From the Casago First Coast local team — updated September 2026

A walkable village around a lighthouse, the widest beach on the Georgia coast, and a quiet north end under the oaks. St. Simons is small, but where you stay changes the whole trip. Here’s the local breakdown.

The Short Answer

Stay in the Pier Village to walk to the lighthouse, pier, restaurants, and shops. Stay at East Beach if the beach itself is the point — it’s the island’s widest, with dolphins at Gould’s Inlet, a bike ride from the Village. Mid-island is the convenient, value base, and the North End is the quiet, historic choice near Fort Frederica. Nothing on the island is more than 15 minutes away.

Pier Village & the South End

Stay here to walk to the lighthouse, the pier, restaurants, and shops.

The island’s south end is its downtown: the St. Simons Lighthouse, Neptune Park and the pier, and the Pier Village’s shops, ice cream, and restaurants along Mallery Street, with a beach right there. It’s the pick for first-time visitors and anyone who wants to leave the car parked — rent bikes and everything is minutes away. Evenings here are the island at its most social.

Best for: First-timers  •  Walk to everything  •  Couples & families

Home types here: Village cottages, condos, and homes within walking distance of the pier.

East Beach

Stay here for the island’s widest, most beautiful beach and a classic beach-house feel.

East Beach is the St. Simons of beach dreams: the widest stretch of sand on the island (a huge sandbar appears at low tide), the old Coast Guard Station (now the Maritime Center), and Gould’s Inlet at the north end, where dolphins feed and shorebirds gather. It’s a residential beach neighborhood of classic homes, a short bike ride to the Pier Village. Choose it if the beach itself is the point.

Best for: Beach-first  •  Families  •  Dolphins at Gould’s Inlet

Home types here: Classic beach houses and cottages; the island’s prime beach-home inventory.

Mid-Island (Frederica Road & Redfern Village)

Stay here for a central, convenient base under the oaks.

The middle of the island along Frederica Road is where locals live and shop: Redfern Village’s restaurants and boutiques, grocery and everyday conveniences, and quiet residential streets under the live oaks. It’s not on the beach, but nothing on this small island is far — East Beach and the Pier Village are each a 5–10 minute drive or an easy bike ride. Good value and a real neighborhood feel.

Best for: Convenience  •  Value  •  Longer stays

Home types here: Single-family homes and cottages in residential neighborhoods.

North End (near Fort Frederica & Sea Island Road)

Stay here for quiet, marsh-view stays and history at the island’s peaceful end.

The north end is the island’s quiet side: Fort Frederica National Monument, Christ Church under its canopy of oaks, marsh and river views, golf, and the road out to the private Sea Island. It’s calmer and more spread out; you’ll drive 10–15 minutes to East Beach or the Pier Village. A fit for travelers who want peace, history, and Lowcountry scenery over a beach-town scene.

Best for: Peace and quiet  •  History & golf  •  Marsh views

Home types here: Larger homes and marsh-front properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where is the best place to stay on St. Simons Island?

A: For most visitors, the Pier Village and south end are the best place to stay because you can walk to the lighthouse, the pier, and the island's restaurants and shops. If the beach itself is the point, stay at East Beach, the island's widest stretch of sand with dolphins at Gould's Inlet, a short bike ride from the Village. Mid-island offers a convenient, value-oriented base, and the North End is the quiet, historic choice near Fort Frederica.

Q: Is East Beach or the Pier Village better on St. Simons?

A: East Beach is better if you want the widest, most beautiful beach out your door and a classic beach-house week; the Pier Village is better if you want to walk to restaurants, shops, the lighthouse, and the pier every evening. They're only a short bike ride apart, so many families stay at East Beach and ride into the Village for dinner.

Q: Do I need a car on St. Simons Island?

A: Not necessarily if you stay in the Pier Village or East Beach - the island is small, flat, and bike-friendly, with paths connecting the Village, East Beach, and mid-island. You will want a car for the North End, for Fort Frederica and Christ Church, and for day trips to Jekyll Island or Savannah (about 1.5 hours). The island is roughly 1.5 hours from both Jacksonville and Savannah airports.

Q: What is St. Simons Island like compared to Amelia Island?

A: Both are relaxed, upscale barrier islands with historic towns, but St. Simons is smaller, quieter, and more Lowcountry - moss-draped oaks, marshes, golf, and a village center - while Amelia Island is larger with 13 miles of beach and a Victorian seaport downtown. St. Simons follows Georgia's rules and pace; Amelia is Florida. Casago First Coast manages homes on both, about two hours apart.
